Ubuntu is an open-source alternative to Windows and Office. There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop EditionFor almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.

Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

Burn your Ubuntu CD

After the ISO file has finished downloading, you will have to burn the file to CD. The ISO file will usually require a special application to burn. Click the link below to find detailed instructions.

Install Ubuntu

When the CD is ready, simply put it in your CD drive, restart your computer and follow the instructions that will appear on your screen. Don't forget that you can create more copies and pass the CD to as many people as you like.
